Maryland Car Accidents Involving Teens

I read an article today regarding car accidents in Maryland involving teens. The numbers are a bit staggering but according to this article, some 6,000 teens and young adults died in an automobile related accident in the United States. I commented on text messaging in an earlier post but the distractions that have been reported are far more such as talking on your cell phone, talking to friends in a car or turning the radio. One of the biggest killer on the roads is a driver of a car being distracted. Studies show that close to 50% of accidents are a result of the driver being distracted while operating a motor vehicle.

While its inevitable that accidents will occur on our Maryland highways the statistics are eye opening. Furthermore after studies most teens admit to using cell phones when driving and although there have been laws passed recently that prohibit cell phone use while operating an automobile or other motor vehicle, they are still doing it.

It is obvious that without stricter laws being passed such as loss of license etc. the problem will still exist. When AAA polled 1,000 teens 46% say they text message, 51% say they talk on cell phones and 58% say they drive with friends. I expect these number will increase.
